Workplace Dignity: Linking Value and Performance
The meeting discussed the critical topic of cultivating a workplace culture centered around dignity. Maria Melfa shared the results of studies linking a culture of dignity to improved work engagement, talent attraction and retention, and overall organizational performance. Ralph Campbell, an expert in organizational behavior, was introduced to further explore the distinction between dignity and respect. Ralph emphasized that dignity is inherent and comes from recognizing the inherent value and worth of every human being, suggesting that treating others with dignity can improve communication and conflict resolution, even when respect has not been earned. Maria and Jocelyn Allen found this discussion impactful and saw potential applications in their workplace. Ralph also outlined the 10 elements that makeup dignity as per Hicks’ research.
Dignity Principles for Workplace Harmony
Ralph Campbell discussed the importance of understanding and maintaining dignity in relationships, particularly in the workplace. He outlined ten elements of dignity, including recognition, acceptance of identity, accountability, acknowledgment, inclusion, independence, psychological safety, understanding, and fairness. He emphasized that violations of these elements can lead to conflict. Ralph suggested using a shared language of dignity to resolve conflicts more effectively. Jocelyn Allen, Maria Melfa, and others present agreed that these principles could improve workplace culture and personal relationships.
Respect and Dignity: A Key Discussion
Jocelyn Allen, Maria, and Ralph had a detailed discussion about the importance of respect and dignity. They highlighted how not being heard or acknowledged could lead to disrespect and violation of dignity. They underscored the significance of maintaining dignity and respect in personal and professional settings, rejecting the idea of separating these aspects of life. The conversation also emphasized the impact of various forms of trauma, including emotional and mental, on the brain and the importance of self-care.
Dignity Index Assessment for Workplace Culture
Ralph Campbell introduced the concept of a “dignity index assessment,” a tool designed to evaluate and improve workplace culture. This assessment allows employees to anonymously rate their company on a scale of 1 to 5 based on ten elements of dignity, such as fairness and psychological safety. The results can be dissected by various factors, including gender, race, and pay. Ralph explained that the feedback from this assessment has been positive, as it encourages companies to reflect on their culture and commit to making improvements. The assessment, which consists of around 25 questions, is not linear or binary and allows employees to express their views on each element on their scale. The ultimate goal is to help companies build a culture founded on dignity.
Dignity Assessment Workshop Implementation
Maria Melfa and Ralph Campbell discussed the implementation of a dignity assessment workshop in organizations. Ralph explained that the workshop is a continuous process, aiming to instill principles of dignity and respect. Maria shared that her organization is considering incorporating dignity into their performance review process. They emphasized the importance of a positive work culture, with respect and fairness being key. Ralph highlighted the role of strong leadership, individual accountability, and the ability to ask for feedback. He also shared his experience with a program called “Bring Your Own Dignity”, which he believes improved personal growth, communication, teamwork, and reduced turnover.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Program: Focusing on Dignity and Culture Fit
Ralph Campbell and Jocelyn Allen discuss the benefits of their diversity, equity, and inclusion program, which focuses on dignity and equity. They emphasize the importance of integrating implicit bias and implicit bias into the conversation, which leads to better results. Maria appreciates the program’s integration of dignity as the foundation for uncomfortable conversations.
