“Any type of growth or personal development requires a very fundamental skill: Learning.”
– Rick Hanson, Ph.D[i]
Researchers have been studying common factors among successful leaders for a long period of time. One of the outstanding commonalities among leaders is that they have made a commitment to lifelong learning. However, what many people don’t know is that you actually have to learn how to learn. The average person doesn’t just sit in a classroom, listen to a lecture, and then automatically know all of the information. The ability to learn effectively and efficiently, and then to apply your new knowledge to your day-to-day activities is an acquired skill. Learning how you learn best and understanding that you may still need to improve your learning skills is a crucial piece of driving yourself forward in your career.
Here are some ways to help you become a better learner:[ii]
Ask Questions as Often as You Can
Asking questions is one of the most powerful ways to learn. By asking questions you are able to gain insight into different perspectives that expand your thinking. Each day we encounter topics, words and concepts that we do not understand. In order to fully understand anything and to learn each day, you must ask questions. Imagine if you only asked two questions per day of your work week. By Friday night, you will have learned 10 things you didn’t know before.

Learn Like A Child
Don’t ditch the puzzles and riddles just because you feel they are a waste of time. Brainbusters and games that challenge your brain, can have a significant impact on your ability to learn effectively. It is important to exercise your brain the same way that it’s important to exercise your body. So, pick up a crossword puzzle or play a brain-busting game with your friends. All of this helps contribute to your skills as a learner.
Understanding how to learn is an integral part of being trainable. Becoming a great learner will help you get the most out of your training, regardless of your knowledge on the topic of the training. Visit our Training Delivery page to see how we help learners retain more information.
